My Five Favorite Cars of 1999
Choosing a list of favorite cars is always going to create controversy, simply because so much of it is subjective. This is my list of favorite cars for 1999 and I would be shocked if your list had all of the same cars. In fact there is a good chance that none of cars on your list would be the same. This is one of the great things about the modern world, there are just so many options available when it comes to cars that there is something to suit everybody's tastes.
1. Lamborghini Diablo
the Diablo was completely redesigned for the 1999 model year and the result was that a car that was already great went to a completely new level. The most obvious change is that the body was completely restyled which dramatically changed the look of the car with almost everybody agreeing that the new one was a marked improvement.
The biggest change on the 1999 Diablo however was the engine, a bigger six liter engine was installed increasing the horse power which combined with the fact that the weight was also reduced resulted in a car that was much faster. The handling was also improved with the upgraded suspension. The result was a true super car.
2. Porsche 911
Like the Lamborghini Diablo the Porsche 911 also got a complete update for the 1999 model year. In this case it was so dramatic that the car was actually marketed as the 996, although everybody continued to refer to it as the 911. The Porsche 911 had been in production for more than thirty years by this point and it had been improved incrementally with each model year, the result was a car that was consistently one of the best on the road. However in 1999 the model went through a dramatic change that resulted in what is arguably the best sports car in history.
Calling the Porshce 911 the best sports car in history is obviously going to raise some arguments but the fact remains it is a great car. They upgraded everything without taking away the thrill of driving the car. One of the problems that a lot of sports cars have is that as new technology comes along they become too comfortable to safe. The result is that the car really isn't fun to drive, this is not true of the 911 which retains that feeling that you could lose control at any second if you aren't careful.
3. Ferrari 360
This car was introduced in 1999 to replace the 355 in the Ferrari lineup and it was a marked improvement over its predecessor. The car was given a more modern look which definitely appealed to a lot of people since at the time Ferrari's were looking a little bit dated. Of course for most people the real attraction of a Ferrari is the way it drives not the way that it looks
The Ferrari 360 is actually the entry level offering from the company so it doesn't have the same level of performance that you would get from the more top of the line models. However compared to other cars in its price range the performance was excellent. The 3.6 L V8 engine produces more than enough power to get the car moving, and since the car was designed for racing you know that it handles really well.
4. BMW M Coupe
This was the car that BMW introduced when they decided that they wanted to go head to head with Porshce. It was actually intended to compete with the entry level Boxter but it out performed it by so much that it was actually more frequently compared to the 911. In terms of pure performance it really couldn't live up to this comparison but given that cost half what the 911 did it was truly impressive.
Opinions vary on the appearance of the M Coupe, there are those who think it looks great and others who think that it is one of the ugliest cars they have ever seen. What is not in dispute however is that the M Coupe is one of the most fun cars to drive that you will find anywhere. The car is a bit of a challenge to drive but that is what makes it so much fun and the reason that is on this list.
5. Lexus LS400
Lexus may be the most underrated car maker in the world and LS400 goes a long way to demonstrating that. Over the years they have built up a reputation for building quality luxury cars but this still doesn't give them their full credit, they showed up and from day one were building top of the line luxury cars that could compete with even the top manufacturers. All of this was at a cost that was far less than their competitors cars were selling for.
The thing that really stands out about the LS400 is that it is everything that a luxury car should be. A lot of makers try to combine the qualities of a luxury car and a sports car, the result is usually a bad comprise. The LS400 doesn't pretend to be anything that it isn't, it is a luxury car and it provides one of the most comfortable rides that you will find on any car.
The list above is my favorite cars, I make no claims that they are the best cars, they are just the ones that I like the best. That being said for the most part the cars that I have chosen were selected based on their performance, which is outstanding, so there is a chance that they may in fact be the best cars that were available in 1999.
